Voyagers – Fall, 2024

The Voyagers return to the ELCA Churchwide offices for our fall meeting: Tuesday, October 22 – Friday, October 25.

Although we continue to work on details, the broad focus of this meeting is racism. Consideration of shame, guilt and lament will contribute to the conversation. The following questions (plus others you may wish to add) will asked:

  • What are contemporary ways of understanding racism and its effects – now and historically?
  • What are primary contemporary ways of responding to racism, i.e., what is proposed to address it?
  • Does Bowen Theory suggest a different way of understanding racism? What is that?
  • What would a response to racism based in Bowen Theory look like?
  • Are there other “-isms” to consider through Bowen Theory?

In addition, we will have family of origin groups, time for case studies, and our traditional “Voyagers’ Night Out.”

Lodging is at the Springhill Suites, Chicago O’Hare. The registration fee for the meeting is $300. Lodging and meals (including breakfasts at the hotel, lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, and dinner on Wednesday is $450 for single occupancy, $240 for double occupancy. Notes: 1) these are regular hotel rooms with two double beds; 2) please make your own roommate arrangements and include that in your registration information.

The hotel has a shuttle from O’Hare Airport. Instructions for accessing it will be sent closer to the time of the meeting.

Wednesday evening, we will head to the Jeunnette’s condo in Oak Park for pizza and a video. Thursday evening will be dutch-treat Voyager’s Night Out. The location is to be arranged.
