A Rabbi Brought a Psychiatrist to Church

November 17, 2016      McLean, VA

With the publication of his book, Generation to Generation: Family Process in Church and Synagogue, Rabbi Edwin Friedman introduced Bowen Family Systems Theory to clergy and other leaders of faith communities.  Over the years, however, some who are concerned with the potential erosion of Bowen theory have questioned how consistent Friedman’s work is with Bowen’s original work.

The Voyagers group was founded by students of Rabbi Friedman in 1999, several years after his death.  Over the years, we have worked with many faculty members from The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, and several members of the Voyagers have completed the postgraduate program there.

With deep connections to the work of Rabbi Friedman as well as Dr. Bowen, the Voyagers decided to host a one-day conference – a think tank – in which to consider as factually as possible similarities and differences between the work of the two thought leaders.  Presentations from this day are made available in the Video Library.
